Furnace collapse sends four to the hospital

An incident occurred Thursday at Eramet Marietta Inc. in the company’s Furnace 1 which sent four people to the hospital, said a company press release.

The release said at around 12:06 p.m. the submerged arc furnace was undergoing a major overhaul and refurbishment and while engaged in the demolition of the furnace shell and refractory lining, four contract employees were injured when a portion of the furnace crucible collapsed subjecting the individuals to hot, gaseous dust.

The release said two of the injured workers were transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital and two additional workers were transported to the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. It said all were undergoing treatment and were in stable condition.

The released said the accident is currently under investigation by Eramet and contractor safety officials.
